Vol. 50 — No. 26 The High River Times, High River, Alberta, Thursday, June 30, 1955 Frontier Days Get Nice Break High River is lucky in the dates for Frontier Days, providing the weather doesn't play us false. The big rodeo program directed by Herman Linder on the afternoon of Julv 6 is the only rodeo event of that week in southern Alberta. 5k) the wild bulls, the bucking horses and the cowboys will all be rested up and r'arin' to go. They should put on a first dass show. There will be a large contingent of contesting cowboys eag»r to make time till the Calgary Stampede opens. The same Is true of the chuckwagons they'll want action before going on to Calgary. So the rodeo events afternoon/ and evening should be hot stuff. And don't forget that the laughable Buddv TTeaton is clowning for the show. An extra attraction on Julv 5 and 6 is the Alberta Jubilee caravan which i« touring the province with all sorts of interesting exhi-bits from ail over Alberta. This caravan will be on the vodeo grounds on Julv 5 and 6 and will be on exhibit free of charge. TPhe parade, which is to be held on the morning of July 6 at 10.30 \* shaping up well, Band music is a vital feature of any parade, and there will be outside bands in addition to the local band. The parade is to have two four-horse stage coaches, one coming up from the south and one from Calgary. The big Planters peanut float is alwavs colorful, and there are hints of some outstanding community entries. The town council is co-operating 100% representing High River's first council in dignltv and garb. The com mittee would like assurance of more entries from town organizations and individuals, because generous prizes deserve a large entry list. Once the election Is over, local people will probablv put their minds to parade entries. Brisk Election "Granny" Hughes Ladles Night At RotOM Campaign Over Mrs. Mary Hughes of Hartell, affectionately known as "Granny" Hughes by her many friends celebrated her 85th birthday on June 28th. She makes her home with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ryan and enjoys life with as much zest as any of her grandchildren. She is the mother of Mrs. Jim Ryan, and has lived with the Ryan family for the past thirty years. The standard old mother-in-law jokes fall jjretty fiat in Jim Ryan's presence, because his tribute is "My mother-in-law has lived with us thirty years and we've never had a cross word." Perhaps Mrs. Hughes' good health has had something to do with her Rimnv Has Entertaining Program It was Ladies' Night at Rotary on June 23, and the men arranged several features for the special enjoyment of the ladies. They secured the popular Colonel Snyder as guest speaker; Dr. Blayney composed one of his witty poems; Miss Loretta Keller of Calgary, gave dance routines, and a priceless H a r p e r t 0 m a k e for t h , performance was given by dra- c o m i p r e s i d e n t C l a r k C o h v e l l malic artists who presented their w a s t o f t n ' e t h e m p f D r own version of The Women. It Blayney's poem, and was also re-was quite a Production, because f r r r e d t o b Q t n e r s m x h e the boys were prettied up for the afternoon tea party, all in £emin (Please Turn to Pace 4) Wednesday, June 29 concludes one of the briefest and most hard fought election campaigns in Alberta's history. In the Okotoks High River constituency there are only two candidates, Hon. Ivan Casey. Minister of Lands and Forests for the S.C. government, and Ross Ellis. Mayor of High River, and Liberal-Conservative candidate. In almost all other constituencies there are three or more candidates which will delay final returns. Indications are that a larger than usual vote will be polled in this constituency. Both candidates
