Cartwright W i n* Stock Cutting H i g h River Rodeo Committee has a nice understanding w i t h the weatherman which assures clear skies f c t the two*day celebration But there was* a breakdown In t h i s re-lationahip in the final minutes on Wednesday night, whan a brisk shower spattered down just aa the presentation of trophies wss being mads before the grandstand. This called a halt t o t h i s interesting feature of the program. Those who did not receive their special awards dt-icot f r om the p l a t f o rm through the hands of Guy Weadick. M.C, were later contacted. Ths second evening of Stampede events brought the most sensational feature of the two-day show when Jack Streeter of Stavely won the calf-branding challenge contest against Bert Sheppard of H i g h River i n 7 minutes 30 3-6 seconds. 8hep-pard's time the previous evening was 14 minutes 10 aeconds. I n t h is t h r i l l i n g challenge contest Streeter represented the Nanton Stampede Association, and Sheppard the H i gh Rover Rodeo Association. I n the 11M8 challenge contest Bert Sheppard won i n 7 minutes, 22 seconds, heating Streeter'a time of 0 min-uiee 51 3-5 seconds. Almost a breathless silence prevails while this event is in progress. Conditions of competition are aa identical as can be made i n every iespect. Each contestant and his team of expert wranglers have 15 calves to rope out f r om the 15 mothers and brand Ths herds of 15 c o w i and 15 calves were f r om the J im Wyatt ranch, a sturdy looking outfit, and every second counted in picking, roping and branding. The Streeter performance on Wadn— day evening was a real sensation. The stock cutting contest on the evening schedule was almost a* *en-sational. There were different contestants each evening. On Tuesday evening J im C a r t w r i g h t won admiring applause for his notable perfor-rcance with a beautifully trained horse which he guided w i t h hacka-more. He won first. Chuck Wagon Races The chuck wagon races are always a big drawing card of the evening. On b o th nights the track was Ideal for t h e eleven entriea r un in four heats. Very fast time was rrsde. On Tuesdsy night Higglns of Aldersyde and the Buffalo Hills outfit made the half-mile In 1 08 1-5. This beat the time of J . J . Swain of I n n i s f a i l who waa the IMS world champion, and whose time Tuesday night wss 1.11 4-5. On Wednesday night the best time waa made by the Buckhorn ranch and H l l l k e r o f Red Willow who made It i n 1.08 3-5 On Wednesday evening additional excitement waa provided when the Buffalo H i l l s outfit came to g r i e f at the start in f r o n t of the grandstand, toppling the wagon and spilling the driver. I t waa a repeat performance of an Identical spill in last year's race, same driver, same outfit.
